I wasn't sure how much I'd like this book, it had come to me as a recommendation, and I've read lots of books like this, so I did not open it right away. But, when I did, and later lead a retreat on this book, I found it to be a great one for both discussion with a group and for personal reflection. What about those women way back when, who were faithful in ways big and small? Bruch Pearson writes, "In any effort to study the Bible, we must try to distinguish between the teachings of Jesus and the teachings about Jesus." (p.17) So, I appreciated her attempt to relay the teachings of Jesus here, Jesus in relationship to the women around him. This is not a doleful, quiet Christ in this book, this is a man doing something radically different in society, and thus paying the price for that behavior. But, in the meantime, he lifts up the women around him, helps them see their God-given power, and that makes, always, for a great story.
